How to Measure a Pool Table Before Ordering Custom Cloth

Custom felt pool table

An eight-foot pool table sounds specific until you try to order cloth for it. Retail names, playing dimensions and outside furniture measurements are not interchangeable. Getting the details right prevents expensive mistakes, particularly when a graphic needs to sit in a particular position.

Why available product sizes vary

Sellers do not all stock the same printed-cloth sizes. Some list seven-, eight- and nine-foot options, while others offer only eight- and nine-foot products. Thus a size listed on a manufacturer's page is not proof that the specific material chosen for your job is available in every configuration.

Ask separately about the printed bed and rail pieces, because some offers bundle matching rail material. Confirm physical dimensions and the exact contents of your order before authorizing the artwork to be printed.

Start by identifying the actual table

Record the manufacturer, model if known and whether the table has been modified. Photograph its full length, pockets, rails and any labels. The professional supplying or installing cloth may recognize construction details that are not obvious from the size designation.

Playing area and outside dimensions serve different jobs

Outside dimensions include rails and cabinets. They help with room planning, but not with confirming the playing surface or the amount of fabric needed. Measure the interior playing area between cushion noses only if your supplier requests it, and follow their measurement instructions precisely. Don't use a furniture-store listing as a cutting specification.

Allow for the way fabric is installed

Billiard cloth normally extends beyond the visible bed so it can be secured. Cushions need their own pieces. Installation methods and allowances vary. Ask the installer to provide the correct material requirements rather than adding an arbitrary number of inches yourself.

Artwork scale is a second measurement problem

A digital design may appear centered on a template while printing at a different scale would shift important features. Give the production team a reference for the desired visible position, not only a square image. Faces, text and thin borders are particularly sensitive to placement.

A simple order checklist

Before payment, confirm the table model and physical size, material dimensions, printed bed area, cushion requirements, artwork orientation, installer availability and production approval process. Keep the agreed specifications in writing.

Once measurements are being verified, you can explore a free visual preview of your artwork. Use the preview to assess the overall design; leave final cutting instructions to the supplier and installer.

Sizing questions

Can I measure only the wooden frame?

No. Furniture dimensions don't specify the playing area or cloth allowance.

Are all seven-foot tables identical?

No. Verify the individual table's construction and supplier requirements.

Do I need separate material for the rails?

Cushion recovery generally involves separate pieces. Confirm inclusion and sizes with your installer.

Can a mockup tell me what size to order?

A visual template isn't a physical measurement or fitting guarantee.

Measure before ordering

Write down the table model if you can find it, then measure the inside playing area between the cushion noses in both directions. Do not treat the outside cabinet length as a substitute for the playfield measurement. Check whether the replacement order needs a bed-cloth piece, rail-cloth strips, or both. Confirm the cut dimensions and any allowance for stapling or stretching with the person installing the cloth before production.

If the table has unusual pocket openings, rounded corners, nonstandard rails, or a conversion top, take clear photographs and send them with your measurements. A design mockup confirms visual placement; it does not establish the dimensions for fabrication or guarantee that a pre-cut kit will fit.
