Custom Pool Table Artwork: PNG, JPG, PDF and Vector Files Explained

Artistic custom felt

Customers often ask whether a JPG is acceptable when a designer recommends a transparent PNG. The better question is what the file contains. A sharp photograph, an isolated company symbol and a repeating background are different types of artwork and should not be prepared the same way.

What print shops actually inspect in artwork

Print services commonly accept formats such as JPG, PNG, PDF, AI and EPS for review, but acceptance of a file type does not mean the supplied image is print-ready. A logo saved as a small raster image can become visibly pixelated at table scale; a true vector original generally preserves sharper scalable edges. Photographs still require enough native resolution for the desired size.

On some dye-sublimation workflows, the background and main artwork are printed together on the cloth. Therefore an image that already includes the intended background may be perfectly appropriate; the critical question is whether the image quality and composition work at physical scale.

JPG: practical for full photographs

JPG is widely used for photographic images, but it doesn't preserve ordinary transparency. Repeated saves or downloads can introduce compression artifacts. If your intended background is part of the photo, that isn't a problem; it is something to keep. Use the original highest-quality version where possible.

PNG: useful when an isolated graphic matters

A transparent PNG lets the underlying felt color show around a logo or illustration. Transparency does not make a low-resolution file print-ready, though. A tiny PNG can be just as unsuitable for enlarging as a tiny JPG.

PDF and vector artwork

A PDF can contain scalable vector shapes, ordinary raster images, or a mixture. Seeing the .pdf extension doesn't prove the graphics are vector. Genuine vector originals are particularly useful for logos because their paths can be scaled without pixelated edges, but any embedded photos still have resolution limits.

Don't assume a preview fixes the source file

An image can be attractive after AI enhancement while having invented edges or altered lettering. Compare processed artwork against the original. The supplier may need a separate production source even when a preview looks acceptable.

What to send with the file

Explain what should appear on the playing bed, whether any background should remain, the preferred orientation and any must-preserve details. A clear instruction can prevent more mistakes than converting the same file to a different extension.

File preparation FAQs

Can a JPG have a transparent background?

Ordinary JPG doesn't support transparent pixels. Background isolation requires a different format or processing step.

Is every PDF a vector?

No. PDFs may contain low-resolution raster images.

Does a large file size mean a sharp image?

Not necessarily. Pixel dimensions, image content and compression are more informative.

Can I send artwork from my phone?

You can often submit a reference from a phone, but preserve the original quality for production review.

A practical file-handoff checklist

When sending artwork, include the original full-resolution file as well as any separate transparent logo artwork you have. Avoid copying a small social-media thumbnail into a larger blank document: changing the file extension or canvas size does not restore lost detail. If you have vector artwork, preserve the editable original alongside an easily previewed PDF or image.

Before final approval, decide whether a photograph should be cropped, extended with a background color, or fitted within a border. Specify the expected orientation and which details must not be hidden under rails or pockets. Get a fresh preview after any major crop or placement change.
