Should Pool Table Artwork Face the Break End or the Opposite End?

Orientation of custom felt pattern

Text can be perfectly centered on a pool table and still face the wrong direction. Unlike a wall sign, a billiard table is approached from every side. Deciding which way a logo or photograph should face is part of the artwork brief, not a detail to leave until printing.

Map the viewing positions

Identify the primary entrance, seating area, likely photo-taking position and the ends where players tend to stand. For a private home, the doorway may be more important than the break end. For a business, guest photographs could be a practical consideration without outweighing playability.

Avoid assuming the top of the image is obvious

Send an arrow or note marking the intended orientation when supplying your graphic. Rotating a logo ninety or 180 degrees can be intentional, but nobody should infer that from a thumbnail. If lettering appears, the orientation error is especially noticeable.

Review the mockup as if standing at the table

A rendered bird's-eye view can hide the fact that a logo faces away from the main entrance. Ask to evaluate the direction in the context of the room and table placement. Once printed, orientation is not a trivial digital edit.

A useful final handoff

The approved layout should indicate the head and foot of the table, which end the artwork faces, and whether cushion graphics have their own orientation. The person printing and the person fitting the cloth should receive consistent instructions.

To test orientation before buying, request a custom table layout preview and explain where the main viewer will stand.

Orientation FAQs

Does a centered logo have a correct direction?

Its direction depends on who the primary viewer is and how the table is situated. It should be chosen deliberately.

Can my image be rotated after the cloth is made?

That isn't a simple adjustment. Confirm artwork direction before production.

Should text face the entrance?

Often it can improve readability, but table placement and the owner's preference govern the choice.

Should rails follow the same direction as the bed?

Not necessarily. Rail graphics need their own layout and production confirmation.

Choose the viewing direction intentionally

A graphic that appears upright to the person breaking may appear upside down to someone watching from the opposite end. Sketch the table from above and label both short ends before laying out the artwork. For a bar or hotel, also consider which side faces the entrance or main seating area.

If the image contains a portrait, emblem, or symmetrical motif, request two previews with the orientation reversed. The better choice depends on how the space is used; there is no universal requirement that an image face the break end.
